From the Pulpit: There is only one route to Heaven
With summer less than two months out (believe it or not), some families are planning vacation travels. Destinations are decided by family council and then one of the many possible routes is chosen.
Getting to Heaven is very unlike traveling to your vacation destination, where any of many possible routes could bring you to your desired spot. Concerning Heaven, Jesus proclaimed, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me." (John 6:14)
Bold, to the point, absolute and very politically incorrect. Jesus used the singular "the." The truth for gaining eternal life is not a mere choice from many different options, nor is it a composite of ideas from various gifted men who have lived down through history, and most certainly it is not my own idea that "just feels right" for me today.
The Word of God, which is "forever settled in the heavens," proclaims the singular direction to arrive at our desired eternal destination: Heaven.
Paul's answer to the Philippian jailer still stands valid: "Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved..." Our confidence for eternal life rests in the Lord Jesus. "This is the record, God has given to us eternal life and this life is in His Son..." (1 John 5:11)
When you're confident you have the correct directions, you'll have far more joy in the journey.
