School board officers elected, salaries remain the same
If you plan on attending an Osakis School Board meeting, plan on being there 30 minutes earlier. At the Jan. 8 regular meeting, school board members approved moving the meeting times from 6 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The meetings take place on the second Monday of each month.
Also at the meeting, the officers were elected and included the following:
• Chairperson — Becky Hensley.
• Vice chairperson — Michael Collins.
• Clerk — Genny LeBrun.
• Treasurer — Greg Faber.
When it came time to set the board's salary, board members voted unanimously to keep it the same, with Hensley stating, "We're not here for the money; we're here for the kids."
Board members receive $65 per meeting for attending in the district and may also receive $65 per meeting for attending outside the district when a claim is turned in. The chairperson receives an extra $250 annually and the clerk receives an extra $200 annually.
Other actions including naming the Osakis Review as the official newspaper for the district and also approving the district's depositories, which include First National Bank of Osakis, Minnesota School District Liquid Asset Fund and Minnesota Trust.
Superintendent Randy Bergquist gave an update on the student enrollment, which is holding steady. The district, he said, keeps track of student enrollment for Sept. 1, the first day of school, and then each month following. Here are the total numbers for K-12:
• Sept. 1 — 820
• Sept. 5 — 813
• October — 811
• November — 807
• December — 810
• January — 815
"We're down a total of five students, which isn't bad," said Bergquist.
