Boot or Salute
Salute: The Osakis Fire Department organized another successful open house on Oct. 12. You could see the excitement in children's eyes as they looked over the shiny fire trucks. There were other educational things to see and do — look inside an ambulance, learn how to get out of a smoke-filled room and get fire safety advice from the assortment of hand-outs that were given away. Many people may not realize the large area the all-volunteer fire department services. It covers the townships of all or parts of West Union, Little Sauk, Leslie, Gordon, Osakis, Orange and Belle River, along with the cities of Osakis, Nelson and West Union. They also have mutual aid agreements with 10 other fire departments. On the morning of the open house, they assisted Alexandria firefighters with a house fire that caused more than $1 million in damage. Each year, the 20 members of the department put in more than 3,000 man hours in rescues, firefighting, training, meetings and equipment maintenance. Firefighters are proud to serve the Osakis community. We should be very proud of them, too.
