Baseball: Osakis takes down Minnewaska in regular season finale
The Osakis baseball team eked out a 4-3 win over Minnewaska to close the regular season in Osakis on Thursday.
“Picking up a win, and more importantly playing well going into the playoffs, was important for us,” Silverstreaks head coach Shad Schmidt said. “We want to be playing our best ball heading into (the playoffs).”
Tied at 3-3 in the sixth, Osakis (13-5) sparked a threat when Carter Rost singled, stole second and advanced to third on an Isaac Froemming single. The Silverstreaks manufactured it into a run when Mason Moore followed with an RBI fielder’s choice, making for a 4-3 lead.
And in the seventh, Luke Imdieke closed the door for a save, stranding a walked batter at first by striking out the final two batters of the game.
Early on, Osakis took a 2-0 lead in the second inning off a hit by pitch and a walk, both with the bases loaded. The Lakers (14-6) tied the game a half inning later through a Colin Weidauer two-RBI double.
The teams traded another run apiece in the fourth to make for a 3-3 game, setting up Rost’s game-winning run in the sixth.
Rost also picked up the win from the bump, tossing six innings of work, allowing two hits and striking out 10. Offensively, his bat led the way with a 2-for-3 effort, which included an RBI and two runs.
“Our sophomores today kind of did it all and got us this win,” Schmidt said. “On Monday, we need a full team effort.”
The Silverstreaks got the seventh seed in the 6AA field. They’ll host 10th-seeded Melrose at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 28.
