Girls basketball: BBE hands Osakis a third loss

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa is fresh off a trip to the state volleyball tournament this fall and is now off to a good start in basketball after a 75-31 win over Osakis that improved the Jaguars to 2-0.

BBE shot 47 percent, including 7-of-18 from three. The Jaguars jumped out 39-16 at the break and put up another 36 points over the final 18 minutes.

“A tough game for the girls tonight,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “BBE has a good, athletic basketball team. It was tough for our girls to catch up to the speed of this game. Once we settled down, we did some good things. Against these good teams, we need to learn to take care of the ball, be strong with the ball and take good shots.”

Osakis (0-3) had 26 turnovers and shot 27.5 percent from the field (11-40). Freshman guard Alexis Johanson had a team-high 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Senior Tianna Stanek added eight points.

“The positive thing is that the team continues to work hard and is trying to work on parts of the game that we practice,” Kalpin said. “We hope once the ball starts falling for us, they will settle down and start playing instinctive basketball.”

Osakis is back at home on Friday night at 7:30 when Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (0-3) comes to town.
