Boys basketball: Osakis closes out EV-W after close first half
The season opener for the Osakis boys basketball team saw the Silverstreaks outscore Eden Valley-Watkins 32-17 in the second half. That opened up a close game as Osakis won 63-43 on the road.
“We did a much better job defensively in the second half by helping in the post and rebounding,” Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “Luke (Imdieke) and Daniel (Savageau) did a great job getting us into our offense, and we had great help from our bench players. (Luke) Staloch, (Carter) Grove and (Carter) Rost provided a nice spark defensively and in transition. We were able to wear them down and take care of the ball, which allowed us to get a big win against a solid program.”
Osakis (1-0) got out in transition to start the game and used that to build an early lead. The Eagles (0-1) fought back and got to within five points at the break.
The Silverstreaks were able to get good looks at the basket the rest of the way as they shot 50 percent (21-42) for the game.
“We were able to make some shots early and got Eden Valley on their heels defensively, which was our goal,” Hoelscher said. “They did a nice job getting back in the game by forcing the ball into the post and using the Streit brothers, (Joshua and Justin). We didn't have an answer for them early on, but Carter Rost did a great job of boxing them out late in the first half and the second half, as well.”
Savageau, a junior guard, was his usual self in the opener. He torched the Eagles for 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Savageau was 7-of-7 from two and 2-of-6 from three, while making 10-of-12 free throws. Imdieke added 12 points, and junior forward Kobie Lara added eight points and six rebounds.
Osakis will welcome in Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Thursday night for the home opener at 7:30. The Falcons are 2-0 after wins against Central Minnesota Christian and Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta.
